Ameretat

Ameretat (Avestan: 𐬀𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬙𐬁𐬙) is a female Zoroastrian divinity representing the concept of immortality. She is one of the Amesha Spenta, the six immortal holy beings created by Ahura Mazda. According to the Gathas, the oldest Zoroastrian scriptures attributed to Zoroaster himself, Ameretat is associated with long life, perpetuality in the hereafter, and the health and vitality of plants.

Etymology and Linguistic Origins

The name Ameretat means "immortality" in Avestan, the sacred language of Zoroastrianism. Etymologically, it derives from an Indo-Iranian root and is cognate with the Vedic Sanskrit term amṛtatva, which carries a similar meaning of deathlessness. In Sassanid-era traditions, the name evolved into Middle Persian Amurdad and later into New Persian Mordad or Amordad — variant forms that appear in the dropdown as related names.

Mythological and Cosmological Role

In Zoroastrian cosmology, each Amesha Spenta presides over a specific domain. Ameretat is intimately connected with plants, bestowing long life and fertility. She is frequently paired with Haurvatat (the divinity of wholeness and health), and the two are often invoked together in Zoroastrian prayer and liturgy. In the later Pahlavi texts, Ameretat is conflated with the angel assigned to guard plants and provide healing. Her sacred month in the Zoroastrian calendar is modern Mordad.

Cultural Significance and Notable Bearers

The abstract concept of immortality—both of the soul in paradise and of long life on earth—is central to Zoroastrian theology, and Ameretat embodies that promise. In Persian tradition, the seasonal and celestial significance of Mordad as a month and the associated Zoroastrian festival (Mordadgān) continue to inspire poetry and classical literature. The 8th-century Zoroastrian theologian Dēnkard dedicates treatises to the inseparable pair, whom scribes used as proper names in liturgical manuscripts.
