Aloysius is a Latinized form of Aloys, an old Occitan form of Louis, ultimately deriving from the Frankish name *Hlūdawīg, meaning "famous battle." The name gained prominence through Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (1568–1591), an Italian Jesuit and aristocrat venerated for his piety and chastity; he was canonized in 1726 and the name has since been in occasional use, particularly among Roman Catholics.
