Meaning & History
Almir 1 is the Brazilian Portuguese variant of Almiro. While Almiro itself is a name of uncertain meaning—possibly a masculine form of Almira 1—its roots trace further back to Elmira 1, which is thought to be a shortened form of Edelmira. The name Almira 1 gained literary visibility through Handel's opera Almira (1705), where it is the name of the title character. Elmira, meanwhile, appears in Molière's classic play Tartuffe (1664), often spelled in the French style as Elmire.
