Aldegund

Aldegund is an Old Germanic feminine name whose etymology can be interpreted in two ways. The most direct derivation breaks the name into elements alt meaning "old" and gunda meaning "war," yielding a sense of "old battle" or "ancient war. However, the name may also have arisen as a metathesized form of Adalgund, which is composed of adal ("noble") and gunda ("battle" or "war). In this view, Aldegund would share the meaning "noble war" or "noble battle." The two interpretations are linked by phonological similarity and the shared gunda element.

Historical and Cultural Significance

The name was borne by a 7th-century Frankish abbess, Saint Aldegund (also known as Aldegundis or Adelgundis). According to tradition, Aldegund (c. 639–684) was a member of the Merovingian royal family. Rejecting marriage, she founded a house at Malbode, which later became the site of Maubeuge Abbey in present-day France. She died of breast cancer around 684. Her feast is celebrated on January 30 in the Catholic Church. As an important saint she was venerated in the region, naming churches, schools and institutions after her throughout northern Europe.

Over the centuries, Aldegund has spawned numerous variants. Latin forms included Aldegundis and its extension Adelgundis. In the early Middle Ages Anglo-Saxon sources used a cognate Ealdgyð, and medieval English produced Aldith alongside a short form Aldus. The Dutch took up the name as Aldegonda, which continues to appear.
