Agathocles is the Latinized form of the ancient Greek name Agathokles (Ἀγαθοκλῆς), derived from the Greek elements agathos (ἀγαθός) meaning "good" and kleos (κλέος) meaning "glory". Thus, the name means "good glory" or "glorious in goodness." It was notably borne by several historical figures from the Mediterranean world, most prominently Agathocles of Syracuse, the tyrant of Syracuse in the 4th century BC.
Etymology
The name Agathokles combines two common Greek components to create a theophoric or aspirational meaning, expressing a hope that the bearer would be renowned for virtue. The Latinized form, standardized in classical texts, became standard in modern reference works for figures like King Agathocles of Bactria (reigned c. 190–180 BC), a Greco-Buddhist ruler of the Indo-Greek kingdom.
Notable Bearers
The most famous classical bearer was Agathocles of Syracuse (361–289 BC), a remarkable figure who rose from a potter's son to become king of Sicily, fighting the Carthaginians and establishing a reign of extreme cruelty but effective rule. His dynasty linked several younger Agathocles: his son (executed by him), a grandson (also killed), and another later served as father of King Ptolemy V Epiphanes in Egypt.
Other historical figures included Agathocles of Pella, father of the Diadochi Lysimachus; Agathocles (son of Lysimachus), the heir forced to drink poison by his scheming stepmother; Agathocles of Egypt, guardian of Ptolemy V and brother of the infamous Agathoclea; and Agathocles of Bactria, who left coinage bearing Buddhist symbols. Pliny and Cicero reference an Agathocles the historian, now lost; a sophist teacher of Damon also bore the name.
Cultural Significance
In scholarship, the name is common in Indo-European linguistics and history as an example of ancient Greek onomastic practices. The king of Bactria issued bilingual (Greek and Kharosthi, an Indian script) coinage with Buddhist motifs, representing cultural fusion. The element kleos echoes epic themes from Homeric tradition.
