Meaning & History

Ada is a feminine given name that originated as a short form of Germanic names beginning with the element adal meaning "noble," such as Adelaide or Adelina.

The name has a long history of use across Europe. A 7th-century Frankish abbess at Le Mans, Saint Ada, helped popularize the name in Christian communities. However, the most famous bearer is Augusta Ada King (1815–1852), Countess of Lovelace and daughter of Lord Byron. Known as Ada Lovelace, she was a mathematician and writer who collaborated with Charles Babbage on his early mechanical computer, the Analytical Engine. She is often regarded as the world's first computer programmer for writing an algorithm intended for the machine.

Ada remains widespread across many languages and regions. Through the Middle Ages, it functioned primarily as a hypocoristic of longer names like Adelaide, gradually gaining independence. By the 19th century, it was revived throughout English- and German-speaking countries. Today, Ada ranks among the top names for girls in several European nations.
