Meaning & History
Tupaq is a name of Quechua origin, meaning "royal, noble". It was borne by the 15th-century Inca emperor Tupaq Inka Yupanki, who expanded the Inca Empire to its greatest extent. After the Spanish conquest, the name was used by Tupaq Amaru (also spelled Tupac or Túpac), the last ruler of the Neo-Inca State at Vilcabamba, and by his 18th-century descendant who led a major rebellion against Spanish rule; both were executed by the Spanish.
Cultural Significance
In modern times, the name became globally known through the American rapper Tupac Amaru Shakur (1971–1996), whose mother Afeni Shakur, a former Black Panther, named him after the rebel leader. Tupac Shakur remains a highly influential figure in music and activism. The Spanish variant Túpac is also used.
