Etymology and Meaning

Sigfrid is a Swedish form of Siegfried, itself derived from Old Germanic elements sigu “victory” and fridu “peace.” The name thus conveys a meaning of “victorious peace.”

Historical and Cultural Context

This name was borne by an 11th-century saint, Sigfrid of Sweden, an English missionary who helped Christianize Scandinavia. According to tradition, he was a bishop from England who converted King Olof Skötkonung of Sweden and was later martyred. The name also appears in earlier legends: the Norse hero Sigurd, a parallel to Siegfried, slays the dragon Fafnir and wins treasure as described in the Völsunga saga. In German legend, Siegfried is the hero of the Nibelungenlied, who bathes in dragon’s blood to become invulnerable and later is treacherously killed. Richard Wagner adapted this story into his opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (1876).

Geographical Distribution and Variants

Sigfrid is primarily used in Sweden and alongside its namesake saint remains in use though less common today. Variants include the standard German Siegfried, Dutch and Scandinavian shortened forms, such as the Swedish diminutive Sigge, along with continental forms Sigi (German), Sigifrid (Germanic), Spanish Sigfrido, Latvian Zigfrīds, and ancient Old Germanic Sigifriþuz.
