Meaning & History
Saturnina is a feminine given name of Spanish and Ancient Roman origin, derived as the feminine form of Saturninus. Saturninus, in turn, is a Roman cognomen descended from the name of the Roman god Saturn, the god of agriculture and harvest, who was also the father of the king of the gods, Jupiter. Thus, Saturnina ultimately shares a linguistic root with Jupiter, which traces back to the Indo-European term *Dyēws-pətēr, meaning “father sky.”
Legend of Saint Saturnina
The most prominent bearer of this name is Saint Saturnina (French: Sainte Saturnine), a Christian virgin martyr venerated in the Catholic Church. According to her legend, Saint Saturnina was a noblewoman of German descent, said to be the daughter of a king. She took a vow of celibacy at age twelve, but around age twenty her parents arranged her marriage to a Saxon lord. Fleeing rather than break her vow, she traveled to France and took work as a maidservant near Arras, hiding among shepherds. The would-be husband pursued her and, upon finding her, attempted to rape her. When she resisted, he decapitated her. The legend recounts that her murderer then miraculously drowned in a fountain, and Saturnina was seen carrying her own head—a motif common among saints known as cephalophores—before her body received veneration by local townsfolk. Her martyrdom is traditionally dated to the year 907, and she is remembered as a patron of chastity and perseverance.
Cultural and Linguistic Context
In Spain, Saturnina is a given name used primarily among Roman Catholic communities, especially in honor of the saint. It shares its root with other names stemming from Saturnus (a Latin name of uncertain etymology, possibly linked to serere, “to sow”), such as Saturnino, its masculine counterpart, and related names from Roman mythology. The name reflects early Christian adoption of Roman-derived names influenced by the broader context of the empire's linguistic and religious framework.
