Meaning & History

Etymology

Salah ad-Din (Arabic: صلاح الدين) is an Arabic name that translates to "righteousness of the faith". It combines the elements ṣalāḥ (righteousness) and dīn (religion, faith). The name is typically an honorific title rather than a birth name.

Historical Significance

The most famous bearer of Salah ad-Din is An-Nasir Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub (c. 1137–1193), known in the Western world as Saladin. He was a medieval Muslim sultan who founded the Ayyubid dynasty in Egypt and Syria. Salah ad-Din is celebrated for recapturing Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187 during the Battle of Hattin, which sparked the Third Crusade. He successfully repelled the crusader forces led by Richard the Lionheart and others, ultimately signing a truce in 1192 that allowed Muslim control over Jerusalem while permitting Christian pilgrimage. His birth name was Yusuf, while Salah ad-Din was his regnal/epithet.
