Meaning & History

Eskender is the Amharic form of Alexander, derived from the Greek name Alexandros, meaning "defending men." The name is particularly significant in Ethiopian history because it was borne by an emperor of the Solomonic dynasty, Eskender (also known as Constantine II), who reigned from 1471 to 1494.

Eskender ascended to the throne at the age of four after the death of his father, Emperor Baeda Maryam I. Due to his minority, a regency council was established, led by his mother Queen Romna Wark and the influential abbot Tasfa Giyorgis. The early years of his reign saw power struggles between the nobility and the ecclesiastical elite. During his rule, he engaged in several military campaigns against the Adal Sultanate.

Eskender's reign is notable for the visit of Portuguese envoy Pedro de Covilham, who was warmly received and later required to stay in Ethiopia as an advisor. Eskender died at the young age of 22 under mysterious circumstances, and his death sparked a civil war between the supporters of his son Amda Seyon II and his half-brother Na'od. The name also has a related variant: Eskinder.
