Meaning & History
Etymology
Deb is an English short form (hypocorism) of the names Deborah or Debra. The root name Deborah comes from the Hebrew name דְּבוֹרָה (Devora), meaning "bee". In the Old Testament, Deborah was a prophetess and the only female judge of Israel; she led a successful military campaign against the Canaanites. The name was popular among English Puritans after the Protestant Reformation and has since produced several diminutives, including Deb.
