According to the Mahabharata, Chyavana was a son of the sage Bhrigu, making him a member of the Bhargava lineage. He is celebrated for being restored to youth through a special herbal tonic known as chyavanaprasham, prepared by the divine twin physicians, the Ashvins. This rejuvenation earned the sage a place in Ayurvedic tradition.

The Rigveda (VII.68:6) describes Chyavana as an aged and feeble man whose youth and strength were renewed by the Ashvins. In another hymn (X.61:1-3), he is depicted as a weak opponent of King Tūrvayāṇa, a worshipper of Indra, and is associated with the Paktha tribe.

Significance in Hindu Epics

In the Mahabharata, Chyavana is portrayed as a powerful sage capable of defying even Indra's thunderbolt (vajra). He notably forced the Ashvins to be included among the recipients of sacrificial offerings—a privilege they had been denied by the gods because of their perceived association with mortals. When Indra resisted, Chyavana created a terrifying demon, Mada ("intoxication"), to intimidate the gods. Ultimately, Indra relented, and the Ashvins gained their share of offerings, establishing their place in Vedic ritual.

Chyavana's story also appears in the Bhagavata Purana and other texts, where his interactions with the Ashvins and King Sharyati illustrate themes of devotion, aging, and divine boons.
