Meaning & History
Anisa is a feminine given name used in several cultures, primarily in Somalia, Arabic-speaking regions, Indonesia, and Albania. It is the feminine form of Anis, a name of Arabic origin meaning "friendly, friend." The root of Anis derives from the Arabic verb ʾanisa (to be friendly), from the triliteral root ʾa-n-s, which conveys companionship and sociability.
Cultural and Geographic Distribution
The name Anisa and its variants span a wide geographic area. In Indonesia, the variant Annissa is common, reflecting the country's large Muslim population. In the Balkans, the Bosnian form Enisa and Turkish Enise are used, adapted to local phonetic patterns. In the English-speaking world, the spelling Anissa has gained usage, partly due to the fame of American model and actress Anissa Holmes (or Anissa '80s star Anissa). The name's popularity in Somalia and Sunni communities arises from its pleasing meaning and connection to positive social traits.
Notable Bearers
Notable women named Anisa include Anisa al-Khwarizmi, a mathematician of the Persian Golden Age. In modern times, Anisa is borne by public figures such as Anisa Somani (Canadian journalist) and Anisa Abdirahman (Somali-Canadian athlete/hustler). The name also appears in artistry, such as the author Anisa Bhatia.
Historical Note: Ancient Anisa
Interestingly, Anisa was also the name of an ancient Hellenistic town in Cappadocia (modern Kayseri Province, Turkey). A 2nd–1st century BCE bronze tablet records its city officials and local institutions, indicating that Anisa was a prosperous, self-governing politeumata (township for privileged foreigners) under King Ariarathes of Cappadocia. However, this toponym is etymologically unrelated to the Arabic personal name; it derives from Ancient Greek.
