Chephren
Masculine
Ancient Egyptian
Meaning & Origin
Chephren is the Greek form of the ancient Egyptian name Khafra, which itself derives from the Egyptian phrase ḫꜥf-rꜥ meaning "he appears as Ra". This name belonged to a pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt (c. 26th century BC) who built the second-largest pyramid at Giza, now known as the Pyramid of Khafre. The Greek historian Herodotus, writing around 2,000 years after the pharaoh's reign, referred to him as Chephren€, and this Hellenized form has since been used in Western historical and archaeological texts.Etymology and MeaningThe original Egyptian name Khafra combines the verb "appear" with the name of the Ra or Re), the falcon-headed sun god who was a central figure in ancient Egyptian religion. Thus, the name carries a theophoric sense: the pharaoh is proclaimed as a manifestation or visible aspect of the god Ra. The rendering "Chephren€is one of several Greek adaptations common in the works of classical writers, following a pattern of Hellenizing Egyptian names (compare "Amenophis" from Amenhotep, or "Ramesses" unchanged).Historical ContextAccording to the ancient king lists and later accounts such as those of the Egyptian priest Manetho (preserved through excerptors like Africanus and Eusebius), Chephren reigned after his brother Djedefre and before Menkaure. His father, Khufu (Greek Cheops), built the Great Pyramid of Giza, the giant of the trio. Chephren's own pyramid — located somewhat southwest of Menkaure. The Great Sphinx of Giza, a colossal limestone statue with a lion's body and human head, stands near the causeway of Khafre's pyramid complex, and many Egyptologists (including Miroslav Verner and Mark Lehner) believe it was carved during his reign to represent his face or the god Horemakhet.Nevertheless, in all uncertainty because of the failure of inscribed records from the Old Kingdom: the Palermo Stone and the Turin King List are too fragmentary for detailed biography. What we know of Chephren comes largely from funerary monuments (the Valley Temple and Mortuary Temple of Khafre, some diorite statues, the seal impressions)).Meaning:"He appears as Ra" (ἐκτάζω/vπλ).Grace Periods (NKJV 2574–21332 BC).Major Work in Sahel region.
