Meaning & Origin
Zababa is a Sumerian and Akkadian war god, serving as the tutelary deity of the ancient city-state of Kish in Mesopotamia.Etymology and OriginsThe meaning of Zababa's name is unknown. Written πππ·π· (dza-ba4-ba4) in cuneiform, the divine determinative indicates his status as a god. He was originally considered a son of Enlil, the chief god of the Sumerian pantheon, but during the reign of the Assyrian king Sennacherib (704β681 BCE), he came to be viewed as a son of Ashur, the national god of Assyria.Historical WorshipThe earliest attestations of Zababa date to the Early Dynastic period (c. 2900β2350 BCE), appearing in texts from Kish as well as other Mesopotamian sites such as the Zame Hymns from Abu Salabikh. His prominence declined during the Sargonic and Ur III periods, but he regained importance in the Old Babylonian period (c. 2000β1600 BCE). Worship continued into the first millennium BCE, with evidence from both Babylonia and Assyria. The goddess Bau (or Baba), who was originally a healing deity, became associated with Zababa as his wife after her cult was introduced to Kish in the Old Babylonian period. This pairing illustrates the syncretic tendencies in Mesopotamian religion.Mythology and TextsNo myths centering on Zababa are known from surviving Mesopotamian literature. However, he is referenced in an UD.GAL.NUN composition (an enigmatic set of Sumerian liturgical works) in passages dealing with the moon god Nanna and his journey to Nippur. He also appears in the Standard Babylonian version of the Epic of Gilgamesh, among texts listing the gods by name.Cultural SignificanceAs a war god, Zababa was often invoked for protection in battle. His temple in Kish was a major religious center. The association with Kish, one of the most important early Sumerian cities (legendary site of the first dynasty after the flood), imbued Zababa with a degree of political significance. The god is sometimes identified with the Hurrian god AΕ‘tabi.Meaning: UnknownOrigin: Sumerian/AkkadianType: War god, tutelary deityUsage Region: Mesopotamia (Sumer and Akkad), Babylonia, Assyria
