Meaning & Origin
Themar is a Greek biblical variant of the name Tamar, used specifically in the Old Testament translation where it refers to the daughter of King David. The name originates from the Hebrew word for "date palm", a tree symbolizing beauty, uprightness, and fertility in ancient Semitic cultures. In the biblical narrative, Tamar, daughter of David, appears in 2 Samuel 13. She was described as beautiful, and her half-brother Amnon became obsessed with her, eventually raping her. This act set off a chain of events leading to Amnon's murder by her full brother Absalom and played a significant role in the conflict that marked David's later years. While the Hebrew Scripture uses the name Tamar, the Greek Old Testament (Septuagint) often rendered it as Themar in specific manuscripts, though the more common Greek form is Thamar (Θαμάρ).
