Meaning & Origin
Nikollë is the Albanian form of the name Nicholas, derived from the Greek Nikolaos, meaning "victory of the people" (from nike "victory" and laos "people"). The name is widespread in the Christian world due to the fame of Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop of Myra (in modern-day Turkey) known for his generosity and miracles. In Albania, the name is used both in its full form and in the definite form Nikolla, as well as through the diminutives Niko and Kolë.Historically, several notable Albanian figures have borne the name Nikollë, especially among Catholic clergy and scholars. Notable bearers include Nikollë Bardhi (1551–1617), a Roman Catholic prelate; Nikollë Mekajshi, a Franciscan prelate; and Nikollë Leonik Tomeu (1456–1531), a humanist scholar who taught in Italy. During the Albanian National Renaissance, Nikollë Kaçorri (1862–1917) was a patriotic figure and vicar general of the Albanian Catholic Church, while Nikollë Bojaxhiu (c. 1872–1919) was a businessman and benefactor, the father of Mother Teresa. More recently, the name appears in politics with Nikollë Lesi (born 1963) and in music with Nikollë Nikprelaj (born 1961).Due to its Greek origin, the name Nikollë is related to many European variants, such as Latin Nicolaus, Greek Nikolaos, Slovene Nikola 1, and Belarusian Mikalai, Mikalay, and Mikola.Meaning: victory of the peopleOrigin: Greek, via AlbanianType: Given nameUsage Regions: Albania, Albanian diaspora
