Lyov is a Russian variant of the name Lev 1, ultimately derived from Russian and Ukrainian word for “lion.” It serves as a vernacural form of Leo, which is of Latin origin. The name Lev has strong cultural and literary associations, particularly in Russia. It was the real Russian given name of the renowned author Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910), best known for his epic novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina. It was also the name of the revolutionary figure Leon Trotsky (1879–1940), born Lev Davidovich Bronstein. Additionally, Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin is the main character in Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel The Idiot (1868). The variant Lyov is less common but represents a phonetic and spelling alternative—note that in transliteration from Cyrillic, Lev may sometimes be spelled as Lyov to reflect the same sounding YO vowel representation; however, Lyov is effectively a different rendering of the same original name.
