Meaning & Origin
Kole is a modern given name of English origin, primarily considered a variant of Cole. The name Cole itself has a rich etymological history, stemming from an English surname that originated either as a medieval short form of Nicholas or from the byname Cola. The name gained significant popularity in the early 1980s, with a further boost in 1990 when it was used for the main character in the film Days of Thunder. Famous bearers include songwriter Cole Porter (1891–1964) and musician Nat King Cole (1919–1965). Kole also appears in popular culture as the first name of a comic book character: Kole Weathers, a fictional superhero from DC Comics. She was introduced in The New Teen Titans #9 (1985) by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez. Kole was a teenager who possessed the ability to create crystals and defensive shields. Unfortunately, she was killed early in the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline, though the decision was later regretted by writer Marv Wolfman. The character was voiced by Tara Strong in the animated series Teen Titans and later revived in Heroes in Crisis (2018). Usage and Distribution While Kole is used in English-speaking countries, it remains less common than the original Cole. It is occasionally chosen as a spelling variation that lends a distinctive touch while preserving the sound and basic meaning associated with Cole.
