Meaning & Origin
Jefimija is the Serbian form of Euphemia, a name of Greek origin. It derives from the Greek verb euphemeo, meaning “to use words of good omen,” compounded from eu (“good”) and phemi (“to speak, to declare”). Saint Euphemia, an early Christian martyr from Chalcedon, is the namesake. Historical Significance The name Jefimija is historically associated with a 14th-century Serbian poet and noblewoman, Jefimija (secular name Jelena Mrnjavčević). Born in 1349 into the Nemanjić dynasty branch, she was the daughter of Caesar Vojihna and an Orthodox nun mother (Jevpraksija). After the death of her husband, Jovan Uglješa Mrnjavčević, she entered monastic life and took the name Jefimija. She is celebrated as the first known Serbian female poet. Her works include the “Lament for a Dead Son” and “Encomium of Prince Lazar,” which are considered masterpieces of medieval Serbian literature. The “Lament” was carved onto the back of a diptych icon, which preserved her legacy as both a poet and a gold-embroiderer. Cultural Legacy Jefimija’s literary contributions are prominent in Serbian cultural memory. She is often cited as an early example of female literary expression in the Balkans. Her name, though tied to the Greek Euphemia, took on a distinct Serbian Orthodox identity through her life and works. In general, the name Euphemia in other languages developed diminutives like Effie (English) and Phemie (Scottish variant), but Jefimija remains strictly confined to Serbian usage as the full historical form.
