Meaning & Origin
Atefeh (Persian: عاطفه) is a Persian feminine given name, the Persian form of Atifa, meaning 'feelings, affection, kind-hearted.' The name ultimately derives from the Arabic root ʿaṭafa, meaning 'to incline, to be fond of,' sharing its core sense of tenderness and compassion with the Arabic masculine name Atif.
Atefah Sahaaleh (1987–2004) was an Iranian woman whose case drew international attention. She was convicted of adultery and executed at age 16 after having been raped repeatedlystarting at age 13. Her story highlighted issues of juvenile justice and womens rights in Iran.
Other notable bearers include Atefeh Ahmadi (born 2000), an Iranian alpine skier who has represented Iran internationally; Atefeh Nabavi, an Iranian student activist; Atefeh Razavi (born 1969), an Iranian actress and makeup artist known for her work in Persian cinema; and Atefeh Riazi, an American information technology leader who has served as New York Citys Chief Information Officer.
Culturally, Atefeh remains popular among Persian families, who value names evoking emotional sensitivity and virtue. It is often associated with poetic romance (عاطفه connotes "feeling" in classical Persian poetry). While etymologically tied to Arabic, its Persian phonology and wide usage have absorbed it fully modern Iranian identity.
