Aimeric
Masculine
Germanic
Meaning & Origin
Aimeric is a Germanic male given name. It is probably a variant of Heimirich, which itself is an older form of Henry. The name ultimately derives from the Proto-Germanic elements haima "home" and rīkṗ "ruler", thus meaning "home ruler". Alternate spellings include Aimery and Aymeric, the latter being the modern French form.
Etymology
The name Heimirich evolved regionally: in Old High German it became Heinrich, and in Latin Henricus. The variant Aimeric may have arisen through metathesis or dialectal influence, sharing roots with the name Amalric (from different first element amal "work" or "vigor"). The form Aymeric also influenced the development of the medieval French name Aymeri, tied to heroic legend.
Historical and Cultural Significance
Aimeric (or Aimery) was notably borne by several viscounts of Narbonne between the 11th and 13th centuries. Aimery II and Aimery III of Narbonne were prominent Occitan nobles. The first king of Cyprus, originally from Poitou, France, also bore the form Aimery in the 12th century. The legendary hero Aymeri de Narbonne appears in the Old French chanson de geste. Later recorded bearers include the 13th-century Gascon troubadour Aimeric de Belenoi.
Notable Bearers
Modern notable bearers include Prince Aymeric of Belgium (born 2005), Aymeric Laporte (Spanish footballer), Aymeric Jett Montaz (French-Canadian actor), and Aymeric Ahmed (Comorian footballer). Others from history include Aimery of Limoges, Latin Patriarch of Antioch, and Aymeric Jaubert de Barrault, mayor of Bordeaux.
